You’ll need to stand out from the hundreds or thousands of students who, on paper, look just like you.

So, in addition to the application, you’ll need a strategy to stand out. To do this, you’ll need to build a “relationship” with the admissions folks, and your application will need to be integrated with the message that has been the centerpiece of your college admissions strategy.

But just submitting an application and communicating with the colleges, alone in a vacuum, is not enough to get you in.

My last article talked about Roadside Emergency Kits and what exactly the kits should include. I have since then been asked to talk about some safety tips regarding tire chains. If you are driving in severe winter conditions, tire chains should be as valuable to you as your emergency kit. If the province or state you are in allows the use of tire chains, having the right tire chains and knowing how to install them can greatly increase your ability to get through the heavy snow conditions on time and without injury.

Tire chains, or snow chains, provide superior traction when attached to the tires of your vehicle and you are driving through heavy snow and ice. Drivers can find a chain to fit just about any need and the chains come in most sizes. The three common types of tire chains are Diamond, Cable and Link.

If you find yourself in an area where tire chains are required, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind before and after you put the chains on.

Tire chains should be installed on the drive wheels of your vehicle according to the chain manufacturers instructions and the vehicle manufacturers instructions.
Make sure you buy the correct size chains for your tires. Deflating tires is not recommended as it may cause permanent damage to your tires.
Always be aware of specific provincial or state laws in advance. Some provinces and states prohibit the use of tire chains while in some provinces or states, tire chains are mandatory in severe weather conditions.
Learn how to install your chains before you actually need them. The last thing you want is to find out that your chains are the wrong size when you actually need them. I am sure we will all also agree that practicing chaining up on a nice sunny day will be much better than trying to learn the procedure during a blizzard.
Limit your vehicles speed to within the suggested range provided by the tire chains manufacturer. Avoid making sudden moves and gently make starts, turns and stops.
After you install the chains, drive your vehicle forward and backwards at least fifteen feet and then re-tighten the chains. You risk damage to your vehicle and the chains if they have been installed too loose. The chains should also be re-tightened after you drive a short distance.
If any part of the tire chain fails or comes loose, pull over and stop immediately (but safely). Do not slam on the brakes and risk a skid.
Carry a waterproof mat or plastic sheet to work on and wear heavy gloves to protect your hands.
As soon as you reach clear and level roads, remove the chains in an area where you can safely remove them.

And while it is true that krill oil is high in omega 3 – perhaps even higher than fish oil – krill oil also contains two anti-oxidant ingredients along with the omega 3 fatty acids which sets it apart from fish oil.

These anti-oxidants are often mentioned as an added benefit of shellfish oil, but the truth is that these antioxidants have also not been tested for safety or efficacy over a sufficient period of time. And they also interact with other medications.

One of the most alarming drug reactions is krill oil’s potential interaction with anticholinergic drugs.

Under drug interactions published on WebMD, Phosphatidylcholine, the antioxidant found in krill oil:

“might increase chemicals that can decrease the effects of drying medications.
Some drying medications include atropine, scopolamine, and some medications used for allergies (antihistamines) and for depression (antidepressants).”

Most of us at one time or another, take antihistamines. It is often prescribed when we are suffering from post nasal drip caused by flu or a cold. And that is what makes krill oil impractical as a dietary source of omega 3 since we would have to cease taking the supplements when we are on these medications.

Fish oil supplements, on the other hand, are thoroughly tested and do not exhibit the same types of drug interactions that krill oil do.

And some fish oil supplements are harvested from renewable sources like Salmon and Tuna near New Zealand.

So why not stay with the tried and tested, safe, renewable source of omega 3?

It’s just another one of those “Cyborg said, McDonald’s said” disagreements.

After Human Cyborg Steve Mann published a blog post on Monday saying he was assaulted by employees at a Paris McDonald’s earlier this month, the fast food chain struck back on Wednesday, saying its own investigation had determined that staffers did ask him to leave but that their “interaction with Dr. Mann was polite and did not involve a physical altercation.” However, after we wrote Mann and asked for his reaction, he sent us a previously-unpublished photo that appears to show a McDonald’s employee grabbing his glasses.

The shot above comes directly from Mann’s EyeTap Glass headset, which he was wearing when a McDonald’s employee he calls “Perpetrator 1″ allegedly tried to rip it off his face. The employee and his coworkers were apparently trying to enforce that particular restaurants’ strict no-photo policy and were concerned that Mann’s headset was shooting pictures or video. According to Mann, the EyeTap Glass does indeed capture images of everything the wearer sees in real-time, but does not permanently store them by default. However, when the device was damaged, it retained images from the incident, including this one.

We’re not forensic photography experts, but this new image certainly makes it look like the McDonald’s staffer in question has, at the very least, made physical contact with Dr. Mann’s glasses. Since we don’t have video, we have no way to determine from the photo alone whether he brushed up against the glasses accidentally or was actively trying to pull them off of the professor’s head. In addition to this grabbing photo, Mann directed our attention to a different picture he had posted where another McDonald’s employee appears to be tearing up a piece of paper, which he says is the doctor’s note he showed them to explain why he needs to wear this non-removable headset.

“Judge for yourself,” he told us. “Plus they can’t deny tearing up the letter from my doctor, so that also would seem to suggest ill intent, e.g. that in itself is also willful damage to customer’s property.”

Whether the OUYA Android-based console lives up to its immense hype after raising millions on Kickstarter is yet to be seen, but it seems that some developers are already interested in developing for it. Robotiki, founded by Infinity Ward and Call of Duty alumnus Robert Bowling, is planning to release an OUYA-exclusive prequel to their upcoming multi-platform game “Human Element.”

That highly-anticipated survival horror game isn’t planned for release until 2015 (!), but assuming the OUYA makes it into a few homes, gamers should be able to get a taste of it ahead of that incredibly distant release date.

it’s unclear what type of game this prequel will be and whether it will share the cross-platform play elements that are said to be a part of “Human Element” — for instance, if you run low on health on your PC, you can head to the store with your phone and “buy” some medical supplies. The prequel may have some of these characteristics, but as it is to be an OUYA exclusive, it seems likely the game will be more traditional.
